Since Nigeria became a democratic Nation with Laws put in place to govern its people, rights such as the freedom of speech and expression enshrined in the constitution have always been bastardized by those elected by the people who fear criticisms especially governors who now see themselves as gods.
This attempt to gag Nigerians from speaking out against bad governance was revealed via a Facebook post by a Human Rights lawyer, Barrister Inebehe Effiong.
According to the post, on 6th December 2020, Ekpo Iniobong Isang, a student of the Agricultural Engineering Department from the State-owned tertiary institution tried to end his life following his father’s threat to disown him if he fails to apologize to the state governor.
Findings revealed that he was accused of insulting Governor Udom Emmanuel through the post he made on Facebook hence his indefinite suspension by the Akwa Ibom State University management which has been acting as a sycophantic mouthpiece for the Governor for years.
It is, however, alleged that the frivolous action by the school management has long been a tradition as students are constantly victimized for simply expressing their views through social media on pressing matters in the state.
