Seven Gunmen armed with automatic assault rifles on Friday stormed the office of the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Hon Aniekan Akpan and abducted a student leader, Comrade Usen Johnson. The victim who is the Interim National President of National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students NAAKISS (Worldwide) was scheduled to attend a meeting with the commissioner to discuss issues related to the NAAKISS election.

According to an eye witness, the victim had arrive the Ministry of Education at the Idongesit Nkanga State Secretariat Complex and was heading towards the Commissioner’s office located at the third floor of the building when he was ambushed by his abductors believed to be cultist from the “Mafia confraternity”.

Comrade Johnson was allegedly bundled up and taken away by the gunmen. Investigation reveals the abductors were led by one Aniefiok Edet, a third year student of the University of Uyo. Immediately, one of the students who accompanied the victim to the Commissioner’s office quickly informed the Commissioner of the incidence, but was alarmed when Hon Akpan did nothing. Neither did he picked his calls when other concerned students called him to beg for his intervention nor responded to text messages sent to his mobile phones.

Unable to comprehend why the Commissioner will decline acting on such a sensitive crime happening in his office, the students quickly alerted the DSS who immediately swung into action and tracked the kidnappers.

The Commissioner is also alleged not to have also picked his calls when the DSS put a call across to him after they were informed of the abduction. The timely intervention of the DSS paid off as the victim was rescued while his abductors were arrested and interrogated. Also arrested by the Secret Service Agents was the NAAKISS President of the University of Uyo, Comrade Esifa who was picked up inside the university campus as one of the master minders of the abduction.

Surprisingly, less than thirty minutes after the kidnappers were arrested, officials of the Akwa Ibom State Government led by the Special Assistant (SA) to the Governor on Student Matters, Comrade Vivian Otobong Akpan (AKA Aquilla) arrived the DSS office in Uyo to secure the release of the kidnappers.

The Governor’s aide was alleged to have promised to sign an undertaking to secure the kidnappers release and also promised to foot the medical bill of the abducted student leader who is presently undergoing medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital for injuries he sustained as a result of being beaten and manhandled during his abduction. Comrade Akpan also pleaded that she will refund all monies, phones, I-pad and wallet confiscated from Comrade Johnson by the kidnappers so long as her complicity in the kidnapping saga is hidden from the public, a request that allegedly infuriated the DSS agents.
