Reports from the hearing convened by the senate committee on communications shows that, the Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of MTN Nigeria, Mr. Ferdinand Moolman, have lamented the loss in profit in the telecommunication industry.
Sources at the hearing who spoke with our Reporter said, MTN were uncomfortable with whatsapp and facebook calls which Nigerians have taken advantage of, to deny the company’s profit.
He also stated that, whatsapp, viber and facebook do not pay taxes to the Nigerian Government, so the government should not allow their calls to be on their applications.
In a bid to gag Nigerians, there have been conspiracies between the Nigerian Communications Commission and telecom operators to hike data, so as to rake in more profits to the industry, when they had deceived Nigerians that the aim was to encourage small telecom operators in the industry.
The CEO has charged the Nigerian Government to take a cue from UAE, and take action like the United Arab Emirates did.
Sources say, the main aim of the telecom operators is to recoup the monies they spent on the fine which they paid to the Nigerian Government through unregistered sim cards, as monies may have exchanged hands in cutting the deal for data hike, until Nigerians resisted the moves.
