EXCLUSIVE: Mo Abudu Quietly Sneaked Seyi Tinubu’s Wife Layal As a Director of Her UK EbonyLife Cinema Company Under a Name That Appears in No Biography of the President’s Daughter-in-Law

While Nigerians applaud and cheer Mo Abudu for opening the first African cinema in the United Kingdom, what they did not know is that on that journey sits the power of the presidency. Three months after the London company behind the venture was born, the wife of the President's son was written into its boardroom, under a name that appears in no biography of the President's daughter-in-law.

There was no announcement, no photograph, no press statement. On 18 August 2026, Layal Jade Tinubu, wife of Seyi Tinubu and daughter-in-law of President Bola Tinubu, became a director of EbonyLife Cinemas & Entertainment Limited, a British company incorporated in London three months earlier by media mogul Mosunmola Folake Abudu, known to the world as Mo Abudu. The appointment was made under a name the Nigerian public has never seen attached to her: Layal Jade Nielsen Tinubu. Documents obtained by SecretsReporters establish the appointment, the name and the date, none of which has been reported anywhere.

The company itself is new. EbonyLife Cinemas & Entertainment Limited was incorporated on 14 May 2026 as the British vehicle of Abudu's EbonyLife empire, the stable behind EbonyLife TV and a string of cinema releases. Abudu is its founder and its sole controller, holding 75 per cent or more of the shares and the voting rights. Layal holds no shares in it at all. What she holds, since 18 August 2026, is a seat on its board, placed there in the tenth year of her marriage and three months after the company was born, with her identity formally verified on the day of appointment.

The name on the record deserves its own paragraph, because it is not the name Nigeria knows. Every biography of Seyi Tinubu's wife, from her 2016 wedding at Lake Como in Italy to the coverage of her businesses, knows her as Layal Jade Tinubu, born Layal Holm. The director's record carries a fourth name the biographies have never printed: Nielsen. Layal Jade Nielsen Tinubu. No profile, no interview and no society report has ever attached Nielsen to the President's daughter-in-law, and the record offers no explanation for its arrival.

The record disagrees with the biographies on a second point. It gives her month and year of birth as March 1990. The widely reported date of birth, 23 March 1991, makes her thirty-five years old. The record's year makes her thirty-six. One of the two is wrong, and it is the identity-verified record that carries 1990.

The path to the boardroom was paved in public, a month before the appointment. On 17 July 2026, Mo Abudu headlined the Lagos summit of the Noella Foundation, the charity Layal co-founded and named after Noella, the daughter she bore Seyi Tinubu in 2017; the couple's son, Tobias, followed in 2020. Thirty-two days after standing at the front of Layal's foundation event, Abudu's British company took Layal onto its board. The friendship was on stage in Lagos. The directorship was filed in London, quietly, under a longer name.

Layal is no stranger to founding things: Tots Toys, her children's retail business, and the Noella Foundation both carry her name openly, in Nigeria, in her own name. The EbonyLife appointment is different in kind. It is her first recorded corporate office outside Nigeria, it sits inside the British arm of one of Africa's biggest entertainment houses, and it was executed without a word to the public whose President is her father-in-law. SecretsReporters scrutiny of the record finds no announcement by EbonyLife, by Abudu or by Layal herself, then or since.
