Fresh findings by SecretsReporters have uncovered a widening corruption scandal at Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, involving the institution’s top management and raising serious concerns about financial accountability.

As learnt, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) at Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Inana Samson, has issued a detailed clarification following a recent wave of “panic payments” made by the institution’s management.

As of late April 2026, a segment of the workforce began receiving massive pension alerts, with over 30 Chief Lecturers reporting lodgments exceeding ₦7 million each. While management has attempted to frame these payments as a resolution to the crisis first highlighted by SecretReporters, the SSANIP Chairman has distanced the union from this narrative. He labeled the move a calculated attempt to pacify high-ranking critics while leaving thousands of other deductions, estimated to contribute to a total shortfall exceeding ₦1 billion, unaccounted for.

A critical legal breach highlighted by the union involves the total absence of accrued interest on these late remittances. Under the Nigerian Pension Reform Act, employers who fail to remit deductions within seven days of salary payment are liable to a penalty of at least 2% of the total unpaid amount for every month of default. Union data suggests that the polytechnic failed to remit these funds for a period spanning October 2024 to January 2026 (approximately 28–30 months). However, the recent alerts represent only the principal sums.

According to Samson, if the Chairman of the Bureau for Pension gears that the Rector is attempting to shift the blame for this non-remittance to the staff, it would be viewed as a “lie from the pit of hell,” as the institutional default remains a matter of public record.

The situation is particularly dire for a specific cadre of the workforce: the 135 staff members employed in May 2023. Despite nearly three years of continuous service and the issuance of permanent confirmation letters, these employees have reportedly not received a single kobo in their pension accounts.

This is despite consistent deductions appearing on their monthly payslips. The union leadership has warned that the Rector’s recent absence from duty coincides with intensified efforts to trace whistleblowers and “deal with” those involved before the State Government or the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) can take further action.

Sources within the union executive allege that management is desperately trying to compromise investigators to avoid the looming threat of prosecution and dismissal from service.
