Ahead of the January 19th, 2017 Inauguration of Adama Barrow the president-elect of Gambia, how is The United Nations Organization of West African States (UNOWAS) ready? Jammeh may be more dangerous than you think.
Yaya Jammeh was born on may 25th, 1965. He joined the Gambian National Army in 1984. He is the Chairman of Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC).
In 1994, the 29 years old Jammeh with the aid of his group AFPRC seized power from sir Dawda Jawara in a coup that took place without bloodshed and met very little of resistance.
Jammeh is a brutal Leader though not as dreaded as Idi Amin of Uganda. He ordered the massacre of 44 Ghanaian migrants
and 10 other ECOWAS nationals in 2004.
He denied ordering the killing but later admitted that the killing was done by the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC), the same group he headed which he used to plot his well strategized and successful coup.
Logically, it implies that Jammeh has a group of Loyalist in the Gambian army and may be planning something fishy to sustain himself in office as president for ad long as he desires “if Allah says so”.
According to him in 2011, he said while speaking to BBC, “I will deliver Gambian people and if I have to rule this country for one million years, I will, if Allah says so”.
The group may be small but Africa should make adequate preparations, it took Fidel Castro only 17 men to defeat America. Though 82 men arrived Cuba, they arrived at the wrong time and were ambushed by Batista’s men who killed them leaving behind only 17.
Yaya Jammeh has plans, it may lead to war UNOWAS should be prepared for this. For all I know, in the words of Senator. Ted Cruz, “The light of truth is stranger than the terror of darkness”.
Africa should unite and fight to bring back Democracy to Gambia.
