A political pressure group in Osun state, Ibile Political Forum has thrown its weight behind the North East to produce the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the party’s forthcoming convention.
The group specifically canvassed that the acting chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff should seek the chairmanship while the South West should retain the National Secretary of the party.
In a statement in support of the South West leaders of the party who canvassed similar position during the week, the publicity secretary of Ibile Forum,Adefemi Adesina said “the decision was taken because of the need to stabilise the party and re-entrench it in the northern part of the country.
” It will amount to political suicide for the PDP to zone it’s chairmanship to the south at a time the party is deeply troubled across the three northern zones. If chairmanship is taken to the south, the party would have become a regional party while the ruling party entrench itself .
“South does not need chairmanship if truly we want the party back in power in 2019. Let the south hold unto the National secretaryship and other positions that may be assigned . Anything outside that is not in the best interest of the party.
” We also call on Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to seek the chairmanship at the convention. He has the capacity and the goodwill to rebuild the PDP and position it for success in future polls. He should accept the growing pressure on him to contest”, the group noted.
