Lawmaker During The Day, Contractor At Night: How Senator Who Sponsored Anti Social Media Bill Used Federal Might To Hijack N273 Million Contract

Former Senator Mohammed Sani Musa who represented Niger East Senatorial District of Niger State at the 9th assembly, has been found complicit in contract racketeering as investigations have revealed that he used his company to hijack a multimillion contract while serving as a senator.

Data on the Kano State Public Procurement Portal have it that the Kano State government awarded a contract worth N273,000,000 to a company run and managed by Mohammed Sani Musa.

It was discovered that the Kano State government through the ”SOML programme”  awarded a contract to SIMS Global Resources Nig. Ltd for the Supply and Installation of 50 numbers of Solar Direct Drive Refrigerators (Haire HTCD 160) at some selected health facilities in Kano state, on the 24 of June 2020.

SecretReporters gathered that SIMS Global Resources Nig. Ltd, with registration number 1386362, was incorporated in Kano state on 20 January 2017 with its status unknown. The company is located at no 469 Sabo Bakin Zuwo road Hotoro.

The company has six key management staff that are active in the day to day running and operations of its business.  They are;  Muhammad Sani Musa, Saifullahi Ibrahim, Abubakar Dahiru, Sanusi Ibrahim, Abubakar Abdullahi, Zainab Abubakar.

Meanwhile, the Code of Conduct Bureau for public office holders, forbids a civil servant or public servant from participating or running in the management of a company in the country, however the law does not condemn public office holders or civil servants from participating in farming.

Senator Musa, who was born in Minna, Niger in the year 1965, contested for the Niger East Senatorial district senate seat in 2019 under the platform of the All Progressive Congress in the February 23rd 2019 election.

He defeated the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party to emerge the winner of the senatorial seat in Niger East Senatorial district.

At the senate he sponsored a bill to regulate the use of social media in the country, which caused public outcry. The bill, titled “Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulations Bill 2019” was one of the 11 bills read for the first time on the floor of the house on November 5 2019.
