Can you believe that ASUU has embarked on strike 15 times since 1999? With the ongoing strike on its seventh month of existence, some wonder what ASUU requests are that the government cannot grant. What if we tell you that their demand for 32 years has been one thing; better funding and remuneration of due salaries to lecturers? What does this say about the commitment of government towards education?

$21 Billion

In the midst of allegations that Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has not remitted $21 billion revenue to the federal account, The Managing Director of the group, Mr Mele Kyari has claimed that it is practically impossible to divert dividend or other revenue meant for the federation account. His exact words are” The NLNG accounts are TSA accounts are domiciled with Central Bank, so it is practically impossible not to remit into the federal account”. But is this claim even true? FALSE!

$3.5 Billion
President Buhari’s ambitious plan of lifting 100 million Nigerians from poverty in the course of 10 years might have to wait as the next 12 years will be set aside for subsidy repayment. According to the 2019 NPDC financial statement, NNPC Board mortgaged OML revenue in 2012 to repay $3.5 billion  fuel subsidy debt. Fast forward to 2020, the agency has paid $2.3 billion. With $1.2 billion yet to be paid, when will the economic development we are being promised be realised? And how will this debt affect Nigeria’s unborn children?
