WICKED MAN: HOW SENATOR GODSWILL AKPABIO DIVERTED N100 MILLION MEANT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF SCHOOL FENCE IN IKOT EKPENE

The neck-breaking degree of corruption and fraud in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under investigation by the National Assembly may be a tip of the iceberg when compared to what may be discovered if the portfolio of Godswill Akpabio while serving as a Senator is perused.

In a memo addressed to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta dated August 7, 2017, it was seen that the erstwhile Minority Leader who represented Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District in the 8th Assembly requested for a contract for the fencing of the Federal Government College Ikot Ekpene.

Document seen by SecretReporters showed that while sitting as a member of the NDDC Committee, Akpabio was awarded a contract for the fencing of the old site of the college in Ikot Ekpene to himself at a whopping N100,000,000 (One Hundred Million Naira); contrary to the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

However, without any regard for the welfare of his constituents, findings showed that more than three (3) years since the contract was awarded and funds said to have been fully released, no work was carried out on the site neither were contractors mobilized to the site.

The College according to residents in the area can be mistaken for a Primary School as it still stands without a fence despite gulping half a billion Naira as seen in the document.
Sources also revealed that the project which has been left undone by the Minister, has given a sharp rise to crime in the area as hoodlums in the community have not only vandalized valuables in the School but have also transformed it into a den of thieves.

Recall that Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio was a two-time Governor of Akwa Ibom State, a one-time Senator in the 8th Assembly and the current Minister of Niger Delta Affairs supervising the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Residents of the constituency have called on the anti-graft agencies to expedite actions to probe the Minister as it concerns the whereabouts of the funds released for the contracts.

Efforts made to reach Senator Godswill Akpabio for his response to the allegation proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
