Nigeria’s second in command, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo has openly confessed that President Muhammadu Buhari was not aware of the Chief Judge of Nigeria (CJN) arraignment until Saturday evening.

Responding to a question thrown at him as a guest speaker in the ongoing conference organized by the Online Publishers Association of Nigerian (OPAN) been held at Sandralia Hotel, Jabi Abuja, the Vice President insisted that on the CJN issue, institutions should do their work.

Addressing the audience Osibanjo stated “People always ask how can such an important person be subjected to trial but I can tell you categorically that he was not aware. The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) not CCT Chairman is completely new and barely three weeks on the job with specific instruction to do his work. My take is I would rather not have a situation where senior members of my profession are tried for such. Personally, I feel very sad about it.”

He reiterated his displeasure at the arraignment of the CJN as he believes there is no basis to say one has committed an offence unless they have been convicted.”

Speaking further on why the war against corruption is mainly against the opposition party, he reminded Nigerians that “the opposition has been in the political space for long so if anyone was going to face such trials, it should be them but the only two governors that have been convicted so far are members of the ruling APC.”

The Vice President also challenged journalists present to live up to their professional ethics by providing the presidency with facts on national issues. “What you should do is give me the facts and I’m going to investigate it and report it. That’s what investigative journalists do all over the world.”
