The Inspector-General of Police Eagle eyed Monitoring Unit Force Headquarters has suffered a setback in the Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption and other crimes as Officer-In-Charge of Team B, IGP Monitoring Unit Force Headquarters, CSP Dalatu Usman attempts to cover up an alleged case of kidnapping, fraud, armed robbery, cultism and unlawful possession of firearms in Delta State Polytechnic Oghara.

The investigation was sequel to a high powered petition to the National Security Adviser to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria dated 18th December, 2015, which was approved and directed to the IGP to investigate and furnish reports in January, 2016.

The IGP further directed the Officer-In-Charge of Team B, IGP Monitoring Unit, CSP Dalatu Usman to investigate and report findings. CSP Dalatu Usman swung into action by sending invitation letters to the suspects including the rector of Delta State Polytechnic Oghara, Dr.(Mrs) Clara Sogbaike, who sponsored other armed robbery suspects with guns, bullets and other dangerous weapons and were also arrested by police.

The suspects failed to honour police invitation on the 25th January, 2016 and instead they were represented by the Governing Council Members of Delta State Polytechnic Oghara led by their chairman, Chief Barr. Asawota Andy who visited the IGP Monitoring, pleaded on behalf of the suspects, obstructed and perverted justice. Officers led by CSP Dalatu Usman went to Delta State Polytechnic Oghara on a fun fare in which their hotel bills and other expenses were sponsored by the same suspects they were investigating.

Statements were obtained in their offices including the armed robbery suspect, Engr. Dickson Eghwatore through whom guns, bullets and other dangerous weapons were recovered by CSP Dalatu Usman.

The suspects were freed in Delta State after the palms of the police officers were greased. They returned to Abuja with the case file and exhibits without any of the suspects for further investigation. Since February 3rd & 4th, 2016 after statements were obtained from the suspects and exhibits recovered, no interview was granted by CSP Dalatu Usman between the complainant and the suspects till date and the suspects never showed up in Force Headquarters. It was gathered by our reporters from a petition dated 5th December, 2016 written against CSP Dalatu Usman and addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of IGP Monitoring Unit Force Headquarters, DCP Garba Baba Umar in which the IGP was copied.

CSP Dalatu was accused of several acts unbecoming of a police officer ranging from conspiracy, aiding, and abetting, shielding, releasing official secrets to suspects, receiving gratifications from suspects to the tune of 5 million Naira, sources alleged, as he demanded for bribe from the complainant before carrying out his constitutional duties, conniving with suspects to evade arrest and prosecution, amongst other acts of misconducts.

Our reporters were also informed that several complaints/appeal by the complainant to CSP Dalatu Usman to arrest and prosecute the suspects over continuous threat to his life and family members fell on deaf ears because he had been compromised.

Sequel to the petition against CSP Dalatu Usman, he has since been directed by DCP Garba Baba Umar in-Charge of IGP Monitoring Unit Force Headquarters Abuja to respond to the allegations against him and was also directed to hand over the case files, exhibits and suspects to the Officer-In-Charge of Team A, IGP Monitoring Unit Force Headquarters Abuja for further and proper investigation.

As at the time of going to the press, further action(s) taken by the Police Authority against CSP Dalatu could not be ascertained.
