With the hardship necessitated by the unexpected halt of commercial and economic activities taking its toll on citizens of Akwa Ibom State, media aide to Governor Udom Emmanuel not minding the economic situation of most families who may be finding it difficult to survive by adhering to the lockdown directive went on air to call them “Gluttons”.
On a live radio program Tuesday morning on Planet 101.1 FM in Uyo, the loose-lipped Special Assistant to the Governor on Electronic Media, Sampson Akpan alias Politics Today, notorious for his unguarded utterances impulsed at pleasing his paymasters, ridiculed citizens especially Akwaibomites who were the major recipients of the palliatives recently distributed by the state government to cushion hunger in most homes within the state.
Speaking in his native Ibibio language, Sampson said “Da akporo amebor unwam gofmen enoghor adi diah anye ntok ntok ke ubak mbufo emekpon ekpa ndidia eboghor” meaning “If you have collected palliative, manage it. Some of you people eat like gluttons…” a comment which did not go down well with most listeners who quickly took to social media to lambast the aide.
As though it wasn’t a constitutional duty for the governor especially in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak, Sampson Akpan also added that people should go to other states then come back and thank the state governor Udom Emmanuel for doing so much in preparedness for the COVID-19 Pandemic which has since officially claimed one life in the state.
Residents in the state who tuned in to the radio program sponsored by the state government has since expressed their displeasure over the comment by the media aide, calling for his immediate sack or an apology as such opinion coming from an aide showcases the Person and Office of the State Governor Udom Emmanuel whom he represents.
