A 2015 House of Assembly candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom and former Deputy Speaker of the State legislature, Mr Okon Uwah has been hacked to death by suspected political thugs in the state. A family source disclosed this to Propeller, Wednesday.

Sources in the late Uwah’s Ukanafun hometown say the thugs who attacked him on Wednesday used machetes and other dangerous weapons to bring him to his untimely death.

Detail of the killing is still sketchy. Uwah had the ticket of the opposition APC to contest for Ukanafun state constituency seat in the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly in next month’s election.

Reports yet to be confirmed by Propeller have it that the attack on Uwah was led by a certain serving Deputy Chairman in one of the local government councils in the state.

The Director of Media & Publicity, Akwa Ibom State APC Governorship Campaign Organisation, Mr Iboro Otongaran confirmed the death of Uwah to Propeller on the phone but said he did not have details of it.

“I don’t have the details (of the death) but someone very close to him called to inform me on the situation”, Otongaran said.

Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom state, Ms. Nwawe Delia told Propeller at 8:55pm Wednesday that the state police command had no report of the said death.

When called on the phone by this reporter at 9:07pm, APC Chairman in the state, Mr Amadu Atai said callously that he was “not ready to speak with any press on any matter.”

Violent killing of opposition politicians has been a recurrent decimal in Akwa Ibom state politics since 2010.

Last year, the APC Director General of the Umana Umana Campaign Organization in the state, Chief Soni Udom, narrowly escaped death when armed men believed to be assassins paid his Uyo office an unholy visit at night.

Till today, police investigations have not uncovered anything meaningful in relation to the believed political attack on Udom.

Also, the men behind the mysterious killing of elder statesman, Albert Ukpanah, are yet to be uncovered. Rather, the state government has been brought into constant row with opinion leaders in the state on how Ukpanah’s son, Odudu may have killed his own father.

The late Ukpanah was a strong critic of Governor Godswill Akpabio and stoutly opposed the governor’s senate ambition.
