As scandal continue to trail former Delta State House of Assembly Speaker, Martins Okonta over his alleged beating of Pa John Nwagimeje, who is the oldest and most experienced politician from Ika South for not supporting his political ambition for 2019, he has finally opened up on what transpired.
Following a news report that the bickering is still on with Okonta threatening to take the car he bought from him, we reached out to him. Incidentally, he was with Nwagimeje in his house, with the old politician picking the phone and speaking to us.
According to the political maestro, he never had altercation with Okonta who is a son to him, wondering how we got the report that he was beaten up. He stated that it was a figment of the imagination of our sources who want to create crisis in the political circle of Ika that made them conjure such a story and feed to us.
Few days later, the former number three man called Secret Reporters publisher to bare his mind on what truly happen. Speaking on phone, he noted that Nwagimeje remains his father and as such can never beat him up or use anyone for that matter to carry out such a wicked act.
“How can I beat up eighty years old man, who is a father to me and others. If you beat such a person, you should be planning for burial, and again, it’s not in my nature. During my days as a Speaker, did you hear any rancor? No, because it’s not in my nature”, he stated.
Jokingly he asked, “the man wey dey beat, he get psychiatric case”? Chatting further, he asserted his love for his people whom he has served meritoriously and wonders why they should rush to the internet just to post events that are not true.
Expressing his concern on how he has being maligned in the media but has not deemed it fit to reply, instead waits on God and karma to take effect on those peddling lies about him, he charged Journalists to always verify their news before rushing to the press.
The former News Agency of Nigeria staff turned politician expressed his desire to always work for his people no matter the pull him down syndrome currently engaged in by few of them.
When asked if he will be contesting the 2019 House of Representatives, he dismissed it as untrue. According to him, his primary target is to help the Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa to achieve his goals for Delta and not to think of 2019. “To do so will be to be joking with the people who are expecting you to perform. We are praying for Okowa to succeed, we are holding vigil for him to succeed, and that is my goal now, not election”.
He admitted that people are envious of those who they see as prospective and potential aspirant, and they see him as one.
Secret Reporters verification after the call confirmed that Okonta is currently under the radar following his undeclared intention to contest for the House of Representatives in 2019. We gathered that while in power, he bought the said vehicle for Nwagimeje eight years ago and can report authoritatively that he is planning to buy a new one for him; just as he also facilitated the employment of two of his sons who are still in active workforce.
