Secret Reporters

A junior Nursing Officer was assaulted last week by patient relatives after the patient died at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos State, Secret Reporters has learnt.

The nurse according to our source was hit, her torn uniform and slapped by the patient relatives. According to an eye witness, a ward attendant rescued the nurse from almost getting killed.

The nurse was consoling the daughter of the deceased patient, by seeing the daughter off to take a cab when a woman unleashed anger on her. A confirmed source stated that this isn’t the first time this incident will take place in the hospital. It also confirmed that some senior nurses were blaming the junior nurses over the incidence.

The life of the nurse is been threatened outside work place. The apex nurse and the hospital management didn’t take any proactive measures in dealing with the matter. Nurses are left in the fear of unknown, blaming the nurses for the death and no guaranteed security for the nurses in the hospital.

We gathered that the association, NANNM Lagos state unit has been contacted on the matter.

Speaking with us, a senior nurse stated that “The management should minimise work place hazard as it affects each unit especially the nurses.

It’s highly imperative that as part of the responsibilities of the hospital management is to provide adequate security to the staff not only the nurses. Nurses are at the centre of the care, thus, their wellbeing, emotional and psychological status should be enhanced in order to promote adequate productivity. I want to urge minister for health, Professor Isaac Adewole to timely intervene in this matter”
