Contrary to wide speculation that former President Goodluck Jonathan looked the other way while corruption reigned in his government; the All Progressive Congress (APC) has actually commended him for not doing so.
The revelation came when the Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) held its annual conference in Lagos and invited top dignitaries to be panelists.
During the discourse, the APC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi while speaking on the presence of fake news noted that President Jonathan was fond of printing out a particular newspaper whenever it accused his ministers of corruption and direct the ministers involved to respond to it.
“He stopped doing so and taking the media serious when they turned to him and started to report things which he knows were not true”, Bolaji who was his Minister for Youths and Sports submitted.
The APC mouthpiece advocated for regulation of Online Media by the government to curb fake news, which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan countered, insisting that Nigerians must resist any form of gagging in the name of government regulation by the media. The PDP spokesman stated that it was such lies and propaganda that brought the current government to power and thus shouldn’t be complaining about it.
