The Delta State Police Command has filed criminal charges against investigative journalist and Publisher of Secrets Reporters, Fejiro Oliver (Oghenedoro Tega) for alleged cyberstalking of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone, over a series of Facebook posts that authorities described as “defamatory and damaging to public officials.”

According to court documents obtained by SecretsReporters from the Asaba Judicial Division, the journalist was accused of publishing “offensive statements” against the two top Delta politicians between May and August 2025, in violation of Section 24 (2)(c)(ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended).

In the first charge, the police alleged that Fejiro, through his verified Facebook page, made several posts accusing Governor Oborevwori of corruption, abuse of office, and election rigging.

He was said to have written that “the governor travelled to Brazil without the people knowing and made it hush-hush,” and that “the governor gave contracts worth billions of naira to his boys for rigging the election.”

Another part of the publication cited by the police quoted Fejiro as saying that “the governor sent officials to China, spending millions of dollars only to inspect CNG buses instead of attracting investors.”

The most controversial phrase, according to the charge, was when Fejiro described Oborevwori as a “sleeping governor who rigged election,” a remark the police claim was deliberately aimed at “injuring the reputation of the Governor and causing public ridicule.”

In a separate charge, the police also accused Fejiro of targeting Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents the Delta Central Senatorial District, with equally scathing remarks.

According to the second charge, filed under the same law, Fejiro allegedly called the senator “grossly incompetent,” “sleeping senator,” “betraying ingrate,” “POS Senator,” “Scammer in NASS,” and “Dodo Senator.”

He also reportedly wrote that “Senator Ede Dafinone must be recalled from the Senate.”

According to the Delata state Police, the comments were part of a calculated social media campaign intended to “destroy the reputation of the distinguished senator.”

The charge sheet, dated October 3, 2025, was signed by R.O. Eze, Esq., Legal Officer, Directorate of Legal Services, Delta State Police Command, Asaba.

Reacting to the development, Inibehe Effiong, Fejiro’s lawyer and well-known human rights advocate, dismissed the charges as “frivolous and politically motivated.”

According to him, “What the police are doing is not law enforcement, it is persecution. These charges are a desperate attempt to keep my client behind bars for exercising his right to free speech and holding public officials accountable.”

Inibehe further stated that the alleged statements, though critical, fall within the scope of journalistic expression and do not meet the legal threshold for criminal defamation or cyberstalking.

Earlier this week, SaharaReporters reported that the Federal High Court in Asaba had given the Nigeria Police Force 48 hours to show cause why Fejiro should not be released unconditionally after being detained for 16 days without trial.

The order, issued on Thursday, October 2, 2025, by Justice F. A. Olubanjo, followed an ex parte motion filed by Effiong, challenging the legality of the journalist’s prolonged detention.

Fejiro, who serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Secret Reporters, was arrested in Abuja on September 18, 2025, and flown to Asaba after a petition reportedly signed by officials of the Delta State Government.

Over the years, he has built a reputation for publishing hard-hitting investigative stories exposing corruption among Nigerian politicians and bureaucrats. His recent reports had accused top Delta officials of contract racketeering and financial mismanagement.

Observers say his prosecution could reignite debates about the misuse of cybercrime laws to stifle press freedom and silence dissenting voices.

As of press time, the journalist remains in police custody, while his lawyers continue to push for his immediate release and the dismissal of the charges.
