RELIGIOUS NEPOTISM: ANGLICAN CHURCH ACCUSES GOVERNOR OBIANO OF APPOINTING MORE CATHOLICS THAN ANGLICANS IN STATE POLITICAL APPOINTMENTS

Secret Reporters

Nepotism has quietly crept into the heart of Nigerian politics as it has now become a prerequisite for the allocation of resources be it employment, admission, contracts, public offices to associates, relatives, religious parastatals and groups as a favour, boycotting the due process. Corruption resulted from widespread nepotism which was the consequence of people disregarding merit and equity in allocating resources or positions in the nation. Nepotism, however, has become part of the unwanted culture we display daily when apportioning political patronage in Nigeria today as an old adage goes if an abomination stays too long, it becomes part of the people’s culture.

Reports reaching SecretReporters reveal that religious tension is currently brewing in Anambra state as the Anglican community is accusing the Governor, Willie Obiano of being biased in his political appointment as he has been criticized for showing favouritism to the Catholic Church.  According to the warring party, Anambra state is a Christian State and not a Catholic Church State so this should reflect in the governor’s political appointment.

According to evidence made available to our newsroom, in the recent political appointment made by the state governor, it is alleged that about 79 percent Roman Catholics were appointed while Anglicans and Pentecostals appointed were 16 and 5 percent respectively. The implication of this undue process is the appointment of non qualified persons into public offices who would turn out to be unaccountable to the public as they were given the position on a platter of gold.

It was further alleged that the Governor wants to hand over the contentious Ajayi Crowther School to the Catholic Mission as it is believed that he is a pro-Catholic Governor which have reflected in his decisions and appointment.

While many indigenes of the state especially the aggrieved Anglican community are of the opinion that the Governor can practice his Christian responsibility in the church and not meddle it with public office, others demand that the Governor run an inclusive government where all denominations in the state are accommodated, treated equally and with fairness and not what is obtainable at the moment so as to make room for competency, transparency and accountability.

All efforts to reach the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, James Eze, proved abortive as he didn’t take his calls nor returned it.
