The newly posted Commissioner of Police to Delta State, Mr Haruna Huzi Mshelia may have started on a bad note, by making himself available to be used as a tool by politicians from the State.

One of his first assignments is a clampdown on activists in the State with the client being the lawmaker representing Ethiope East in the State House of Assembly, Mr Evance Iwurie.

The lawmaker who’s known to be a patent liar and braggart according to sources is pissed that one of the state foremost activist, Comrade Akima Onos had the guts to challenge him to come back to the local government to give constituency briefing as the norm in legislative business.

Evance we gathered was angry and decided to use some of his social media poor writers to post unfounded information on Akima, who responded by making public his demand on accountability. He further exposed Evance attempt at blackmailing him with money when they met, an act he refused to fall for.

Using his influence as a lawmaker, he approached the State former CP, Ibrahim Zanna, to arrest Akima and charge to court, which was done.

There was however a twist on Wednesday, when the activist went for the court hearing in Obiaruku, and Evance on tip of by one Taiga decided to send policemen from the State CID to re-arrest Akima and whisked away to the Headquarter.

Secret Reporters police sources confided in us that the ACP in charge of the State CID categorically told the Investigating Police Officer in charge of the case to “make sure a good prosecutor is gotten to secure a remand for Akima. Honorable wants him in Ogwashi-Ukwu prison by Thursday. This action we gathered is in conjunction with the CP.

Akima is currently under custody in Asaba, where the CP has directed the ACP to quickly take him to an unknown court tomorrow, before his lawyers will arrive to make case for his release.

Nigerian politics is filled with intrigues. In Akwa Ibom State maligning and political godfatherism has been the order of the day, especially when the purpoted godson begins to rebel. Or when the sycophantic followers refuse to dance no more to the tune played by their power drunk leaders. The attention of Secret Reporters has been drawn to a publication by an Akwa Ibom State newspaper called the Annang Peoples Front.

A press release signed by Etim Johnson and sent to Secret Reporters by Akwa Ibom Unity forum has it on good authority that the publication was sponsored by Sen. Godswill Akpabio to malign and ridicule His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel and former Military Administrator, Idongesit Nkanga.

The publication falsely claimed that Governor Udom Emmanuel is planning to cause tribal crisis in the State. The publication also falsely claimed that Governor Emmanuel sponsored Sen. Anietie Okon and Chief Assam Assam to attack Sen. Godswill Akpabio.

“Senator Godswill Akpabio has persisted in his subterfuge and continues to incite the people of the State against Governor Emmanuel.

Governor Emmanuel who is the leader of PDP has shown unbelievable restraint and humility in the face of unending provocations and insults, and this should not be taken as a sign of weakness.

As Governor Udom Emmanuel rightly pointed out (when he issued the warning to Akpabio and others who are out to destabilize his Administration) the State has been peaceful compared to the Akpabio era when State sponsored kidnappings and assassinations were rife.  Prominent leaders who opposed Akpabio from Ibibio, Oro and Annang (especially Abak 5) were either abducted or murdered or both. The list is endless. Those who were abducted for political reasons during the era of Goodwill Akpabio include Gen. Edet Akpan Rtd., Mrs Comfort Enwang, wife of Group Cpt. Sam Enwang Rtd.,  Engr. Iniekong Udonwa who was a governorship aspirant etc.

Cases of those killed in cold blood including HRM Robert James Obot (Ibibio), Barr. Imo Udonwa (Ibibio), Miss Aniefon Aniediabasi, (Ibibio) Engr. Emmanuel Ekpenyong (Submarine) (Ibibio), Mr Mathias Ekpenyong (Ibibio), Barr. Benjamin Udoekpo (Ibibio), Two women at Qua Iboe Church, Iwok (Ibibio), Dr Austin Edet (Ibibio), Obong Paul Inyang (Ibibio), Daughter of Paramount Ruler Abak (Annang Abak 5), Mrs. Marie Ikpe (Ibibio), Ezekiel Peter Ebere (Episco) (Anang), Dr. Chris Ekong, accused of killing the Ekpenyong brothers. (Record shows he was in South Africa when the murder took place) (Ibibio) Rev. Ntia I Ntia (Ibibio) Apostle Ime Iyire (Ibibio), Mrs Philomena Udonwa (Ibibio), Anthony Akpanobong (Ibibio), Mr Daniel John Ekanem- (Ibibio)    Asuquo Onyong (Oro), Chief Efiong Ononokpono (who was arrested for criticizing Akpabio and died immediately he was released from detention, (Oro), Dr. Ime Umana (Annang Abak 5) (arrested, prosecuted and killed by auto crash for opposing Akpabio), former deputy speaker AKHA Rt. Hon Okon Uwah (Annang Abak 5), Chief Albert Ukpanah (Annang Abak 5), Mrs Udonwa (Ibibio), Mrs Grace Awana who died from shock after her premature retirement as Head of Civil Service (Oro). Another prominent  son of Abak 5 , Chief Soni Udom narrowly escaped assassination.

The hypocrisy of the Annang Patriotic Front who never asked questions when prominent Annang sons like Dr. Ime Umana, Albert Ukpanah and Rt. Hon. Okon Uwah were killed for opposing former Governor Godswill Akpabio, is ridiculous.

It has not been forgotten how an eminent son of Abak 5 Atuekong Don Etiebet was persecuted and humiliated by Godswill Akpabio. The pains and the wounds of the Akpabio era are still very fresh. Godswill Akpabio should let sleeping dogs lie. Governance is not only about the uncompleted projects Godswill Akpabio falsely claimed he had completed.

Governance is also about peace and security. We commend Gov. Emmanuel for maintaining peace and security in Akwa Ibom State. We urge him to deal decisively with anybody no matter how highly placed who wants to sponsor insecurity in the State.” the group stated.

The Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) has called on the international community and Press to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressive Congress (APC) to stop the plan of intimidating journalists and publishers through arrest ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The foremost online group in Nigeria made the call in a press release signed by its Vice President, Emmanuel Asiwe, who is also the publisher of Huhuonline.

In the statement, OPAN demanded for the immediate release of Timothy (Tim) Elombah, the detained journalist and Editor of United Kingdom (UK) based online news platform, by Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris and charge him to a competent court of law if need be.

“Tim has been held for the eleventh day now since his arrest alongside his brother Daniel Elombah, a UK based Lawyer and Publisher of, in the wee hours of New Year Day in their family home in Nnewi, Anambra State on the orders of IGP Ibrahim in a gestapo operation by about 15 officers of the Federal Police Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).

Despite an order by a magistrate court in Mpape, Abuja, on Tuesday January 2, 2018 to keep Timothy in police custody for 7 days to allow them carry out further investigation as requested by them, with an order to bring him back to the court on January 9, 2018, the IGP and Police have refused to do so instead, they have continued to incarcerate Timothy for no just cause”, the statement read in part.

According to the statement released on Thursday evening and sent to major international media including the White House, United Nations, African Union and ECOWAS, “the police say they are holding Timothy because published an opinion piece titled: “IGP Ibrahim Idris’s Unending Baggage of Controversies” that they argue defamed the IGP and the police force. The said article was written by one Ebowei Dickson and it was widely published on multiple websites.

We do not understand how a civil case of ‘defamation’ turned into a criminal case in Nigeria, where the IGP is both the accuser and defender in his own case.

In civilized nations, what the IGP and the Police Force would have done is to sue and allow the Court do its job. A recent book titled “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” was authored by Michael Wolff which questions President Donald Trump’s fitness for office and yet the American Presidency never sent the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Police after the Author despite their claim that the book is full of lies”

The publishers accused President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC as the silent hand behind the arrest of the Elombahs, insisting that they are testing the waters ahead of 2019.

“We view this action by the IGP who’s an employee of President Muhammadu Buhari as the voice of Jacob but the hands of Esau. The continuous detention of Timothy Elombah and harassment of Daniel Elombah by the Federal Government is simply an attempt to muzzle the press ahead of 2019 and the arrest of the Elombah brothers is testing the waters ahead of the election. We will not fret or be cowed!

We call on the International community and Media Houses to call Buhari and the All Progressive Congress (APC) to order and stop the intimidation of the online press in Nigeria. This action by the IGP is the smuggling in of Decree 34 which Buhari as a military Head of State promulgated into the country using cybercrime as the new name. We make bold to say that as Nigeria’s foremost online publishers association, we will not watch Buhari bring the Press to disrepute and ridicule through this ‘internet age Decree 34’.

OPAN is calling on President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to ensure a society where there is ABSOLUTE freedom of the press and to stop the use of security agencies to intimidate and harass journalists in any form. The free press is here to stay”, the statement continued.
